“Always, we begin again.” As we cross the threshold from 2020 to 2021, I’m reminded of these words from the Rule of St. Benedict. There is much to leave behind as we enter into the New Year. Grief, sorrow, heartache, anger, frustration, isolation, and more. No doubt 2020 has been a challenging year for many.

And no, it won’t all go away on January 1. As much as we’d like it to, the slate won’t be wiped clean. We are still in the midst of a pandemic, after all, one that shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, even with the vaccine.

But, as St. Benedict reminds us, we can begin again. Every day. Over and over.

I’ve been away from this space for a while. A pause. I had to stop and take care of myself—to put my own oxygen mask on before I could help anyone else with theirs. You see, I’m prone to depression and anxiety, and these last few months have been hard. I learned only a few years ago that depression and anxiety are symptoms of trauma. Symptoms. Not in my control. Not my fault. And symptoms I must pay attention to and tend to when they arise.

I’m still working through challenges, taking one step at a time. Beginning again each day. Showing up to my life and paying attention. Doing the best I can, just for today.

And while the slate may not be wiped clean, the New Year offers an opportunity to begin again. To keep wondering and exploring what I have to share with others here in The Breathing Room.

I hope you will join me on the journey.
